Male Thrush and Male Yeast Infections

What is it?

Male thrush, otherwise known as a yeast infection or sweat rash is when naturally occurring yeasts over produce and start to irritate body. Candida is the most common yeast to cause these irritations.  Thrush can develop in many places on our body, including your genitals and mouth.

Candida, yeasts and other micro organisms occur naturally on the skin and don’t usually effect us.  It is important to mention, that though you can pick up male thrush from sex it is not an STD.  Male thrush is more common amongst men who are less sexually active.  Thrush is more commonly associated with women, as most women will suffer from thrush at least once in their lifetime.

What are the symptoms?

Male thrush has some quite easily diagnosable signs.  If you think you might be suffering from male thrush, I would recommend you  check yourself out against these symptoms.  The most common symptoms of male thrush are:

• The inflammation and discharge from the head of the penis and under the foreskin

• Redness

• Itching

• Irritation

• Soreness

None of the symptoms are that pleasant to contract, but if you do have male thrush it is not the end of the world!  Unlike with some STDs, thrush is easily treatable.

How can I get rid of it?

There are natural ways to try and get rid of thrush, such as using yoghurt or even garlic, but I wouldn’t fancy using either of these methods myself.  The more common and reliable way of stopping thrush is by over the counter medicines, in particular the Canesten treatments.  These conveniently come as both tablets and creams.  The treatment isn’t expensive and it doesn’t take that long to work.  It can be quite embarrassing buying the treatments, but there are a wide range of legitimate online pharmacies which you can buy from.

Tablets

One of the most popular treatments is taking a tablet to cure your thrush.  Within tablets, the active ingredient is generally fluconazole. You should always check the packet for instructions but typically you would only be required to take one tablet. There can be possible side effects, which include diarrhoea, headaches, flatulence and sickness, but these are rare, though more common than with the creams.  The advantage of using the tablets is that it will stop any internal yeast infection, which a cream would not treat.  With a cream, if you were also suffering from an intestinal yeast infection it would not be treated, so you could have another round of thrush.

The most popular thrush tablets are the Canesten Oral range.

Creams

Thrush creams typically come with either 1% or 2% Clotrimazole. With the creams they will help sooth the infected area and they kill off the thrush. With the thrush creams you generally apply a thin layer of the cream three to four times a day. The cream will need to be rubbed in gently and may cause a slight irritation. This is quite common, but if it is really hurts you should stop applying and contact a doctor.

The use of creams to combat male thrush is popular as the cream also supplies a cooling affect.  This cooling affect helps reduce the irritation caused by the male thrush.  Creams can be more popular than tablets, as side effects are less likely.

The most popular thrush cream is Canesten Thrush Cream.

Duo

Along with being able to use tablets or creams, you also get the Duo which is a ‘best of both worlds’ solution.  The duo packs include the tablets and the cream.  The advantage of this is you get a better chance of stopping the yeast infection as you get two ways to target it.

Many people would recommend the Duo, above the other two treatments.  The tablet is a very effective way of stopping thrush as it works internally.  As the cream provides a soothing action to reduce the irritating itching that male thrush causes it is a great secondary treatment.

Out of the three treatments I have mentioned I would recommend using the Duo.  When choosing medicines it is always a good idea to look into them and speak to your pharmacist/doctor.
